Businesses on Board: Lockdown Edition 2020

By Media Team on

Get your business on board to support ex-servicemen and women and be part of the fight against the covid-19 mental health crisis, all while engaging staff and clients in a light-hearted challenge and boosting their wellbeing in a difficult winter. Here are some examples of businesses are taking part in 2020.

A VARIETY OF CHALLENGES: Shard Capital are taking on a number of challenges across the business. Some staff are walking from Fulham Football Ground to Shard Capital’s HQ at 20 Fenchurch Street (22km) before climbing the stairs to their office on the 23rd floor! Others are trying to achieve 20km per day for 20 days (in relay teams of 2, 3 or 4), and some are even collectively attempting to virtually cycle to the North Pole!

12 MILES OF CHRISTMAS: Staff from Resilient Nutrition, including CEO Ali MacDonald, are walking 12 miles on 12th December, and encouraging their family, friends and clients to take part as well.

WALKING HOME: staff from Hamilton Barnes are all walking or cycling home from their London office, and are aiming to raise £3459 (the distance in miles between their London and NY office).

WALK OF OMAN: Level Peaks have set a collective target of walking 1000km in 20 days, inspired by team leader Pete Newland who is taking part in the Grenadier Walk of Oman (Walking With The Wounded’s 2021 expedition). Pete will be walking 400km in 20 days in the Omani desert and he and his team are currently walking 400km collectively for Walking Home For Christmas as a warm up.

TEAMWORK: DXC technology, long-term supporters of WWTW, have created team pages for various offices across the country, allowing for some friendly competition and creativity.

DAILY WALKS: Hewett Recruitment are taking part in Walking Home For Christmas for the first time after recently signing their pledge for the Armed Forces Covenant. They have set themselves a collective target of 250 miles, taking place during lunch breaks and weekends!

CONNECTIVITY: Veteran-Owned UK have encouraged their members from across the country to take part in WHFC, with a number of regions creating their own team page. Challenges range from the Wharfedale Three Peaks (VOUK North Yorkshire) to a walk along the coast (VOUK Portsmouth).

WALKING TOGETHER: Jason Marshall, Director of Littlefields Supplies Ltd, has recruited seven of his friends to walk with him as part of team British Dollar Rum, from Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire to Ye Old Ferry Inn at Symonds Yat, a grand total of 15 miles.

KEEP THE BANTER FLOWING: A team of Plymouth Veterans (and friends), led by Paul Montgomery (owner of locksmith company Sir Fix-a-Lock) are walking 22 miles with a goal of £1000, and are looking forward to the banter on the walk.

12 DAYS OF GIVING: As part of their #G4S12DaysofGiving, colleagues from G4S are marking Christmas 2020 by walking 20km whilst carrying 20kg #G4S12DaysofGiving. And to add to that, they will be dressed as Santa Claus!

GOING VIRTUAL: On 16th December, members of Greater Manchester Police will be taking part in a virtual walk, with all participants walking at the same time in different areas to remain within social distancing regulations. GMP are brilliant supporters of Walking With The Wounded, and regularly take part in our walk from the Manchester Cenotaph to Canada Street, which was unable to take place this year.

An Interview With: Andy Schofield

By Media Team on

Last year, Walking With The Wounded (WWTW) supporter and veteran, Andy, took on a mammoth Walking Home For Christmas (WHFC) challenge. He walked from London to Manchester (350km) over the course of five days. We sat down with him to find out what inspired him to take on the challenge and how he prepared.

What were you reasons for signing up to WHFC?

I signed up for WHFC firstly to support my veteran community. It pains me to see so many people who served that are now suffering mentally, physically, and emotionally. The rise in veteran homelessness is staggering and the transition to civvy street is nuanced and complex. I wanted to do my part for the community and to raise money for WWTW, a shining light in the veteran charity space!
