Walking Home For Christmas 2023 - And that's a wrap!

We'd like to thank everyone who signed-up to our 2023 Walking Home For Christmas event.

Over the course of December, supporters of Walking With The Wounded across the nation have donned their walking boots and Santa hats, stepping out to show their solidarity with veterans and their families during this festive season.

This year, we witnessed remarkable challenges undertaken by our supporters. Glenn covered an impressive 160 miles from Manchester to Lockerbie, WWTW team member Steve walked from Manchester to Blackpool within 24 hours, Matthew conquered the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge, 13 Company South West London Army Cadet Force marched 14 miles across London, Lee journeyed from the Shetland Islands home to Aberdeenshire, and the...

WWTW Manchester team walking to raise funds

A team of our staff and local supporters will be walking from Canada Street in Manchester to The Cenotaph in St Peter’s Square on 8th December to raise funds for those who served.


Commenting on the Walking Home For Christmas challenge, Tom Knight, WWTW North West Regional Manager said, “Every year, the dedicated staff at Walking With The Wounded take part in our Walking Home For Christmas challenge. This year, our Manchester team will walk to the Cenotaph as a way of paying our respects to those who have served.

Sally Orange MBE Takes the Helm as Walking Home For Christmas Ambassador

Major (Retired) Sally Orange MBE, a distinguished Veteran, multiple World Record Holder and Armed Forces Champion, has been proudly unveiled as the Ambassador for Walking With The Wounded's (WWTW) Walking Home For Christmas campaign.


Now entering its 10th year, "Walking Home For Christmas" stands as Walking With The Wounded's annual festive fundraising initiative. Over the past decade, this campaign has collectively raised nearly 2 million to bolster veterans and their families through programs encompassing mental health support, employment opportunities, and care coordination services.

Regional Walks Kick Off The Campaign!

Our 3 regional walks in London, Newcastle and Manchester helped kickstart the campaign in style on Friday, with over 100 people coming together to walk a combined 60k in icy conditions and finishing at the Cenotaph in all 3 places. With over 12k raised and still going, a plethora of great stories and a special event in Manchester where we welcomed Andy Schofield home after his long, long walk, from London, it was the perfect curtain raiser and we cant wait to hear more stories come through!

Walking Home For Christmas Survey Results In

Have we lost our love of lockdown walking?

Fewer than 1 in 3 of us walk everyday in winter

A new survey finds that fewer than 1 in 3 (29%) of the UK adult population walk every day in winter – and astonishingly 10% never go for a walk. The research, from Walking Home For Christmas, the annual Christmas fundraising campaign run by military veteran support charity, Walking With The Wounded, also found that 84% of us watch TV at Christmas, compared to 63% who go for that traditional walk after dinner.

But when it comes to improving health and wellbeing, 68% would consider trying to go on a regular walk - compared to 1 in 10 (11%) interested in group fitness classes and 1 in 5 (22%) who would think about joining a gym.

Army Cadets Force - Marching on Mental Health

This year the Army Cadets Force have taken the leaderboard by storm, raising a whopping 44,160 so far...


73 ACF teams from up and down the country have donned their Santa Hats to help support ex-military and their families this Christmas.  Leading the way for ACF is Beds & Herts County, having raised a total of 4,099.91 and counting!


On Saturday 5th December Niquita Potter, from Devon ACF completed an incredible 14.1 miles from Haytor on Dartmoor to the war memorial in Newton Abbot. She got cold, she got wet and it was dark by the end - but she made it. 


Niquita absolutely smashed her target raising over 1000. Thank you!

WWTW - We get locked down but we get up again

This year the WWTW Staff are donning their Santa Hats and facemasks and are getting involved in their own challenges across the country on 10th December...


WWTW Employment Advisor, Lynsey Cordiner will be walking 14 miles from the war memorial in Newcastle City Centre to Whitley Bay Cenotaph, accompanied by her dad and Max the cockerspaniel.

















Anna Tydeman, HR Business partner, will be doing a 'walk down memory lane', with her partner Stuart and their pup Leia. They will be walking from their current home to the childhood homes, a 12 mile round trip in total. Anna is a team member of Team 200,000 a collaborative effort from our HR, Finance, and Head Start team, joining forces to support those who have served.

Over two thirds of Brits believe lockdown has had a negative impact on their mental health

The season of ill will. Christmas affects half of Brits mental health

• 1 in 5 cannot remember the last time they laughed

• 70% of Brits say laughter is crucial for their mental health

A recent national survey has found that poor mental health is at an all-time high due to COVID-19, with 68% of Brits stating that their mental health has been negatively impacted during the pandemic.

A further 16% of Brits admitted to feeling lonely, whilst almost a fifth of respondents (18%) noted that the biggest hit on their mental health this year was not being able to go on holiday, and 10% linked their poor mental health to being confined to their houses.

Al Murray and James Holland launch Walking Home For Christmas with plea for best military banter

 Comedian Al Murray and WW2 Historian James Holland have challenged the UK public to supply their best military jokes and banter to help support Walking With The Wounded’s Walking Home For Christmas campaign – to support ex-military facing mental health battles.  

The major fundraising drive is WWTW’s only fundraising event this year due to Covid-19. It challenges the general public to step out of their comfort zone and to walk somewhere important to them in support of Britain’s ex-military. Taking place from Thursday 10th to Sunday 20th December, the challenge is the perfect way to beat lockdown blues while obeying local Covid-19 restrictions.
