Sally Orange MBE Takes the Helm as Walking Home For Christmas Ambassador

Major (Retired) Sally Orange MBE, a distinguished Veteran, multiple World Record Holder and Armed Forces Champion, has been proudly unveiled as the Ambassador for Walking With The Wounded's (WWTW) Walking Home For Christmas campaign.

Now entering its 10th year, "Walking Home For Christmas" stands as Walking With The Wounded's annual festive fundraising initiative. Over the past decade, this campaign has collectively raised nearly £2 million to bolster veterans and their families through programs encompassing mental health support, employment opportunities, and care coordination services.

Sally Orange commenced her military journey in 1998 as a member of the Royal Army Medical Corps, where she served as a physiotherapist for 22 years. Her dedicated service played an instrumental role in the rehabilitation and recovery of numerous service personnel returning from conflicts, including Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sally's journey took a poignant turn when she was diagnosed with severe depression and chronic anxiety. She received support from WWTW’s mental health team and became actively involved in raising awareness of the challenges faced by individuals in the Armed Forces and those in broader society who grapple with mental health difficulties.

Commenting on her newly appointed Ambassador role, Sally Orange said, “I am honoured to be chosen as the Ambassador for Walking Home For Christmas. Walking With The Wounded is a charity close to my heart, I received support through their Head Start mental health programme at a time when I needed it the most and I am excited to champion this incredible cause and through my role, show continued support for veterans and their families.”

Walking Home For Christmas encourages the public to get out of their comfort zones and embark on a meaningful walk to show their support for Britain’s veterans. The campaign takes place from Saturday, December 9th, to Wednesday, December 20th. This challenge offers an ideal opportunity to beat the winter blues, get out into the fresh air with family, friends and workmates and raise money for a worthwhile cause.

Footsore, exhausted but ecstatic: 700km challenge finishes in Newcastle

Celebrations as Long Way Home reaches the culmination of its 18-day challenge, walking 700km from central London to central Newcastle, pulling the pulk the whole way. The pulk is deeply embedded in our history and heritage and accompanied a group of wounded veterans, joined by Prince Harry, in 2011 as they undertook the first expedition of its kind to the North Pole.

Long Way Home leader and Head of Events and Partnerships at WWTW, James Davis said: “That expedition proved that the sky was the limit for those wounded in the service of their country and showed the world what veterans can do. If you tell a veteran they can’t do something they will promptly go out and do it! From that expedition Walking With The Wounded was born and a key...

The intrepid teams have faced poor weather, Storm Bram, mud, multiple punctures and equipment failures, but determination has kept them walking.

Gregg joined for the final rain-drenched kilometres into central Manchester. He said: “The special thing about Walking With The Wounded is they do exactly what they say…it’s about supporting people who have come across hard times, so thank you very much for your support. This whole mission...

By Media Team on

We are utterly delighted to announce that Nichola Tidd, military veteran and star of Channel 4’s BAFTA award-winning programmes Hunted and Celebrity Hunted, has joined us as Ambassador for this year’s Walking Home For Christmas and Long Way Home.

During her decade-long military career, Nichola served in the Royal Navy before secondment to Army Intelligence, where she saw two operational tours, in Afghanistan and Iraq.

No stranger to mental health struggles herself, Nichola, has bravely spoken out about the mental health challenges that female veterans can face, particularly within a culture that can discourage vulnerability. Her own PTSD symptoms began to emerge while she was still serving and continued to develop once she had left the...
