Stevenage veteran who recently learnt to walk again joins Walking Home

Mark Williams, an Army Veteran from Stevenage, is planning to cover 28 miles between the 15 and 22 December for Walking Home this year, walking for four hours each day.

Mark served in the Army for 16 years and spent 10 years housebound due to a debilitating spinal injury. His recovery was further set back when he suffered from sepsis in 2022. Despite these challenges, Mark has made remarkable progress with his recovery and rehabilitating, recently starting to walk again without the use of walking aids. He plans to use his Walking Home challenge to inspire others facing similar challenges and raise vital funds for Walking With The Wounded.

Project Active invites the public to join their winter ‘Walking Home’ hikes

Project Active, an Oxfordshire well-being and physical fitness business specialising in outdoor fitness and adventures, are inviting members of the public to join them on two group hikes as part of their Walking Home challenge. The first hike was a 10 mile walk on Sunday 01 December, setting off from Woodstock Town Hall, with the second taking place on Wednesday 01 January, offering the chance to start off the new year with a crisp winter walk.

Royal Navy veteran taking on Portsmouth walk

Royal Navy veteran and Regional Manager for Walking With The Wounded will be stepping out at midday on December 06 to embark on a sponsored walk around Portsmouth with a group of fellow walkers as part of our ‘Walking Home’ fundraising campaign. David, who served in the Royal Navy for 7 years, is dedicated to giving back to his fellow service members. He, along with fellow fundraisers, will walk 6 miles on 06 December from Milton Common Community Memorial, along the coast to Old Portsmouth and on to Victory Gate.

Colchester resident walking 20 miles in support of veterans

David Welham, from Colchester, is covering 20 miles during the month of December as part of his Walking Home challenge, including a round-trip commute from his home to Colchester train station and back.

Commenting on his motivation for taking part in Walking Home, David said, “I’ve supported charities a lot in the past but haven’t done a fundraising challenge for a while, so I thought it was time for me to get back out and do something for a cause I care about. I’ve supported Walking With The Wounded before and living in a Garrison town and having friends who served in the Armed Forces means I have that military connection, so it made sense for me to sign up. Joe completes 77 mile walk 'home'

Joe Swift, a Walking With The Wounded supporter and Walking Home participant, recently completed a 77-mile walk in memory of his father, who he sadly lost 30 years ago.

Joe’s dad served in the Armed Forces, and Joe describes him as being the ‘perfect role model’ for him and his sister when they were children. Joe was motivated to take on the challenge after hearing about the work Walking With The Wounded do to provide veterans with tailored mental health support within 7 miles of their home. With this in mind, Joe made the decision to walk from his hometown, Burton-on-Trent, to his father’s hometown, Wigan, a journey of 77 miles.

RAF veteran takes on 100 mile Peak District walk

Jack Roberts, an RAF Veteran from Macclesfield, is walking 100 miles through the Peak District between November 11th and December 11th.

During his time in the RAF, Jack completed two tours in Afghanistan in 2009 and 2011 as a Force Protection member of the Medical Emergency Response Team. Following harrowing experiences, he was diagnosed with PTSD and received critical support from Walking With The Wounded.


Reflecting on why he chose to take part in Walking Home, Jack said: “With support from WWTW, I was diagnosed with PTSD and underwent 16 sessions of EMDR therapy. Jules Hudson is the face of 2024's Walking Home winter campaign

Today we announce the 2024 launch of the annual Walking Home fundraising effort, encouraging all Brits to take a walk this winter, big or small, in aid of Walking With The Wounded's continued support of military veterans.

Former Army Reservist and presenter of the BBC’s Escape to the Country, Jules Hudson, leads the campaign. Jules took part in a sponsored walk at Monmouth Castle where his former regiment, the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers, is stationed. Alongside him were local cadets from Gwent and Powys Army Cadet Force and Monmouth School Combined Cadet Force.
