As a Persian woman who grew up during the Iran–Iraq war, the sounds of fighter jets, bombings and air-raid sirens remain etched in my memory. My father, a teacher, was sent to support the education of young soldiers serving far from the front lines, as many had little opportunity to continue their schooling. He would be gone for months. Later, my uncle volunteered to serve, disappearing from our lives for years.
Life eventually brought me to England, where I encountered the stories of British servicemen and women who had endured conflicts, life-changing injuries, mental health struggles and homelessness. Their courage, kindness and humanity touched me deeply.
Their stories also gave me the courage to confront my own childhood trauma and begin to heal. Through them, I discovered a profound respect for those who sacrifice so much in the service of others.
Walking With The Wounded is deeply personal to me. I understand that the wounds of war can endure long after the fighting ends, and that coming home does not always mean finding peace.
Today, I fundraise not only to give back, but to honour those whose service has shaped my own journey of healing and understanding.
Please join me in supporting Walking With The Wounded. Every donation, however small, can help a wounded veteran find renewed hope, dignity and a path forward. Together, we can remind those who served that they are never forgotten and never alone.
Warmly,
Shima
