Afghanistan Veteran Matthew undertakes 24 Marathon!

By Events on

Local veteran, Matthew, based in Wiltshire, will be taking on the challenge of walking for 24 hours to raise money for ex-military and their families as part of Walking With The Wounded’s Christmas campaign, Walking Home For Christmas. On December 16th, Matthew will take on the momentous challenge, supported by Damon Saddler the Personal Development Manager, and will be joined for parts of the route by residents and other staff from Entrain Space which offers supported accommodation to ex-military, helping them transition into civilian life.

Commenting on the challenge, Matthew said, “I joined the Army in 2009 and really enjoyed my Army career. I was deployed to Afghanistan twice and everything seemed fine until I returned to the UK in 2014. It took me a few years to realise that I was suffering from mental health problems, both my attitude to life and behaviour had changed and I had lost interest in Armed Forces life. I left the Armed Forces in 2019 and sadly, my family life came under strain. I found accommodation in Erskine House and in January 2020, I met Tony from Walking With The Wounded, who helped to turn my life around.

I am taking part in Walking Home For Christmas to support veterans like myself who need a helping hand. I now have the confidence and motivation I need to move forward with my life and my career.”

David Welham, from Colchester, is covering 20 miles during the month of December as part of his Walking Home challenge, including a round-trip commute from his home to Colchester train station and back.

Commenting on his motivation for taking part in Walking Home, David said, “I’ve supported charities a lot in the past but haven’t done a fundraising challenge for a while, so I thought it was time for me to get back out and do something for a cause I care about. I’ve supported Walking With The Wounded before and living in a Garrison town and having friends who served in the Armed Forces means I have that military connection, so it made sense for me to sign up. I hope that I can help make a difference to people’s lives and motivate others...
