10 Walks to Inspire You in 2019

As we approach the start of Walking Home For Christmas, take a look at some of our favourite walks and stories already planned for this year:
AFGHANISTAN TO ARBORETUM: Walking With The Wounded beneficiary, Simon Johnson, who has taken part in Walking Home For Christmas for the last 5 years, will be completing a virtual walk from Afghanistan to the UK, walking 3,500 miles over the course of the year, culminating in a 30 mile walk to the National Memorial during WHFC
39KM FOR 39 YEARS: Briony Hill will be celebrating her 39th birthday on 17th December with a 39km walk (24+ miles) from Salisbury Cathedral to the The Ship Inn at Upavon, hoping to raise £390.
HOLLAND TO HOME: Veteran, Ben, who now lives in Holland, will be walking 425 miles from Holland to his home town of Barnsley. He will be setting of on 3rd December and is hoping to complete the walk in 11 days completing an average of 40 miles a day. TEAM NOODLE: 6 year old Myiah, who took part in WHFC last year, is back at it again! This year she will be walking to school everyday (1 mile) from the 1st November until the end of term.
24 HOUR WALK: After taking part last year, Gary Smith is planning to beat his fundraising from last year by taking part in a 24 hour walk to see how many miles he can conquer!
SOUTH STAFFS: Ian Pringle and his students from South Staffordshire College are planning to walk from Tamworth Campus to the National Arboretum at Alrewas.
THE ROYAL WALK: After a successful walk from Windsor to Chertsey last year, Maria Fisher and her team will be completing a royal walk this year around Windsor Royal Park.
THE GREAT NORTH WALK: In 2015 a team of veterans took part in the Walk of Britain, raising funds for WWTW. For Walking Home For Christmas 2019, some of the team are coming back together to walk from the WWTW hub in Gateshead to the hub in Manchester. 125 miles in 4 days, 13 - 16 Dec. MOLLY'S CHRISTMAS WALK: On 13th December, Molly will be walking home from her school in Fakenham which is just over six miles!
THE SHOTLEY CRAWL: This popular walk, organised by Geraint Pugh, starts at the iconic Butt and Oyster pub in Pin Mill on the Shotley Peninsula, Suffolk. It follows the bank of the River Orwell and finishes by the famous Shotley Pier.

Steve and Craig to take on Manchester to Blackpool walk

On December 14th, Steve McGuire and Craig Nield, residents of Manchester, are embarking on a 60-mile walk from Canada Street in Manchester to Blackpool. Their goal is to raise funds to support military charity Walking With The Wounded’s Walking Home For Christmas campaign.
Supported by a dedicated team, Steve and Craig will face the challenge head-on. Upon reaching Blackpool, they will be treated to an exclusive tour of Hanger 42 Spitfire Visitors Centre.

Dan Searson to walk 60km across Greater Manchester in 24 hours

Dan Searson, founder of Challenge The Wild, who is based in Greater Manchester, will take on a 60km walk on the 12th and 13th December to support veterans this Christmas.
Dan served as an Army Officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps, during which time he was deployed to the Balkans, East Africa and the Middle East. He was awarded several British Army Commendations during his service.

An Interview With: Andy Schofield

Last year, Walking With The Wounded (WWTW) supporter and veteran, Andy, took on a mammoth Walking Home For Christmas (WHFC) challenge. He walked from London to Manchester (350km) over the course of five days. We sat down with him to find out what inspired him to take on the challenge and how he prepared.
What were you reasons for signing up to WHFC?
I signed up for WHFC firstly to support my veteran community. It pains me to see so many people who served that are now suffering mentally, physically, and emotionally. The rise in veteran homelessness is staggering and the transition to civvy street is nuanced and complex. I wanted to do my part for the community and to raise money for WWTW, a shining light in the veteran charity space!
